Don't think you have much to worry about if running an open air box with a K&N filter.
I have a Harley with K&N filter exposed to driving rain and have ridden 1000's of miles in the rain, with not even a hiccup.
I've heard that K&N's allow air but no water to pass through, maybe it's true.
Mine never worked when new. First time fan came on, motor was turning but not the blade.
Plastic blade has a brass insert and is just pressed ;on motor shaft. Fan was stamped "made in India."
I thought the parts were made in Austria and assembled in India, guess not.
Replaced by dealer under...

Since I'm not racing the bike and see a good bit of time below 7K, I think I'll put it back stock till a PCV is available just to be safe.
Good info about the air cleaner box. I had ordered the intake cover before I took the air box cover off. Didn't even notice that it came apart.

Just installed MNNTHBX's intake cover along with a K&N (KT-1211) air cleaner filter, and what a difference in sound of engine, throttle response, and seat of the pants hp increase.
