Has anyone else had problems getting the CD service manual to work? I'm a Mac guy, so I'm having to run it on SWMBO's PC laptop. The manual is browser-based, but it's locked her computer up four times, trying both to autorun the app and trying to launch the English files. Suggestions appreciated, as I figure I'll need the advice again.

BTW, I know it's dog slow, but I'm pretty sure it's worked on this same laptop once before, as well as on a buddy's shop computer.

I just have the pdf file as well and it works perfectly on my mac.

I replied to your other post with what I think is the info you need as well.

Yeah, I don't have windoze on the Mac, so I'm at the mercy of the laptop. Thanks, reen- I'll hop over to the other thread.

If you have the service manual on CD it's extremely easy on a Windows PC to permanently extract the PDF file so you do not need the CD and more importantly, you don't have to view it in the web browser anymore!

First, open the service manual the way you normally would per instructions on the CD. BTW, you must have a newer version of Adobe Reader installed as well as the plug-in in the browser must be installed for the manual to open correctly, at least that's been my experience, it would not work without the plug in even though it ultimately opens in Adobe Reader which is a stand-alone program.

So back on track, when the service manual opens in Adobe Reader all you need to do is note the file path from which Adobe Reader is loading the service manual from on your hard drive (I.E. C:/User/..../.....) etc, write this file path down or memorize it.

Important part! With the CD in the drive, service manual open in Adobe Reader go to the location you memorized or wrote down and search for the exact file name temporary given by the copy protection which will delete the file when you close Adobe Reader and creates a new random filename each time you open it. Once you have found this file simply copy, do not move, copy and paste it anywhere you wish that's accessible on your hard drive. Last step, rename this file you just copied and pasted anything you want just make sure it ends with .pdf file format. Now simply double click to open again anytime, no more CD required!

That is good advice. I've got to get sat down with SWMBO's laptop to see if I can pull it off. When you do that, are you able to search? I would guess that if I save it as a .pdf file, my Adobe Reader on the Mac should be able to open it, right? Just save it to a thumb drive?

Yes, it will be searchable in Adobe Reader. You can save the file anywhere you like. I like to have a copy on my phone. Hint: this method works for any language version stored on the CD although you may need to have that language pack installed first.

My dealer says the service manual isn't available to owners...just dealers. I will get it elsewhere if I keep the bike. 230 miles since fan replacement and all is well so far.

Yeah, your dealer sounds cranky. Here's the part name and number:
KTM CD Repair Manual RC125/200/390 2015 #3206215
You can buy it from most any online pace that sales KTM parts. The first google hit was KTM CD Repair Manual RC 125/200/390 2015: AOMC.mx for $25.19 but IIRC their shipping was a little pricey.

FWIW, I opened C:\Users\myusername\AppData\Local\Temp and sorted by Date Modified. There was a file named A9RD3A0.tmp that had a date matching when I opened the locked down PDF and was 16,000 KB in size. Every time I opened the PDF using the application on the CD it would end up in the same place, same size and be named A9xxxx.tmp where the "xxxxx" would change. However, I couldn't copy the file - I'd always get some variation of "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process"

For example:
C:\> copy C:\Users\myusername\AppData\Local\Temp\A9xxxxx.tmp C:\Users\myusername\Desktop\A9xxxxx.pdf
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process
C:\> robocopy /R:0 C:\Users\myusername\AppData\Local\Temp C:\Users\myusername\Desktop\ A9xxxxx.tmp
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process

The google pointed me to something called hobocopy available at https://github.com/candera/hobocopy/downloads. I downloaded hobocopy-1.0.0.0-W2K3-Vista-x64-Release.zip for Windows 2003, 2008, Vista and Windows 7 and extracted it to C:\Hobocopy. Ran the following command and had it on my desktop (note the syntax is a little funky):

C:\Hobocopy> hobocopy C:\Users\myusername\AppData\Local\Temp C:\Users\myusername\Desktop\ A9xxxxx.tmp

Then I right-clicked and renamed the extension from .tmp to .pdf and I had my service manual pdf! It's alot easier than it sounds. :)

Or change windows explorer file settings in control panel to show hidden and all file types and extensions and you can cut and paste like normal / not have file lock error...

Note worked in Win 10.

Thanks for an in-depth write up of the process, it's been a while and I didn't remember the exact details. I didn't get any errors when I did this a year ago. Good to know for those who have trouble and as Fasteddy pointed out above is probably why I didn't get any errors.

No luck at all. Locked the whole computer up. Ctl-Alt-Delete---nothing but the spinning wheel of death. I can use the browser, because that was open, but I can't get back to the main windows home screen. Got Acrobat Reader 9, showing no updates available. No idea about the plug-in. The computer never launched Reader anyway. Couldn't get it to run the files or AutoRun either one. Everything else on the computer seems to work. Maybe I can take it to work and try there, but I can't afford to crater a computer there.

Irritating, at best.

FWIW, that didn't work for me on Windows 7 so, I tried the command line. that would have been soooo much easier though. :)
As for the spinning wheel, it does take awhile to open on this particular computer too - longer than it should.

Interesting, Windows is so consistent.NOT! I started at the command line with things like 'set dircmd=/a /v' moved on to 'attrib -H' then copy and file lock error... so thats when I went to control panel. it was on a win 8 to win10 upgrade machine FWIW, the other thing I noticed is it down loads the executable from the CD and leaves a copy behind in down loads every time and it does take a long time.

My first PDF of it I made just by printing to a PDF but lacked the ability to search.

I ordered a 2016 RC390 cd manual and got one for the 2015 model. Are these bikes identical? I thought the slipper clutch was new this year.

Thank you for sharing the pdf extraction from CD.
I proceeded in a different way : as soon as the file is open, I print it to PDF.
Easy and fast.
But doing so, I loose the table of content, so your method is not as fast, but for better quality.
