False Neutral

My bike (2017 KTM RC 390) goes to false neutral on track when I down shift from 4th to 3rd or 5th to 4th. It doesn’t happen on every down shift but probably 1 in 5 shifts. I think I am not pushing hard enough on the lever, but was wondering if it could me issue with my bike.

I get that every now and then too. I had the same issue on my last race bike, a Ninja 300. The only fix I know of is an upgraded shift detent arm and spring. Here's a link to it: KTM rc390 Pro Shift kit, ceramic wheel bearings Factory Pro 800 869-0497 They really do make a big difference.

If you don't go that route, you just have to make sure you downshift like you mean it.

I see, thanks! Do I have to remove the engine cover to install the Pro Shift kit? Also, would it work with quick shifter? I am planning to install quick shifter soon.

Yes, you have to take off the clutch side engine cover, so have a new gasket ready. You'll lose a bit of oil as well, but not a lot. I have not run one with a quick shifter but I can't see how it would be a problem.

The installation is pretty easy, but take pictures of everything as you go along. You need to pull the clutch pack and the clutch basket out. Once all that is out of the way, you'll see the old detent arm and it'll be quick work after that. If you were planning on putting a new clutch in, this is a great time to do it.
