question about installing piston rings

The piston has three rings and a circular wire (looks a bit like a spring).
Anyone know where the wire gets installed?
I'm thinking it goes in the gap of the bottom ring, but it doesn't want to stay there, so I'm wondering if it goes somewhere else?

It puts outward pressure on the oil ring (lowest) Its a rough deal to install and a piston ring compressor makes it much easier.

Does that means it goes behind the oil ring, between the oil ring and piston?
Or between the ring and the cylinder wall?
